Get to know Nate Liao, CFA, Senior Research Analyst, Davidson Investment Advisors
Nate shares the importance of patience and perspective when identifying investment opportunities.
1. Can you describe your role and key responsibilities?
I’m a Senior Research Analyst on the investment team at Davidson Investment Advisors, where I focus on identifying investment opportunities across sectors in the public equity market. My work centers on deep fundamental research: building financial models, analyzing industry dynamics, and engaging with management teams to understand how businesses create enduring value. I collaborate closely with colleagues to debate ideas, refine investment theses, and ensure every holding aligns with our long-term, valuation-disciplined philosophy—helping clients better serve their missions and achieve their goals.
2. What motivated you to pursue a career in finance, and what keeps you passionate about your work?
I’ve always been fascinated by how great businesses are built—how leadership, culture, business models, and capital allocation decisions compound over time to create lasting value. Investing allows me to connect curiosity with judgment, and I find it intellectually stimulating to uncover insights or dynamics that the market hasn’t fully recognized. What keeps me passionate is the constant learning. Every company, industry, and market cycle presents new challenges and insights.
3. How has the industry evolved since you started, and what significant changes have you observed?
The pace of information has accelerated dramatically, but the core challenge remains the same—separating signal from noise. While data and technology have made markets more efficient on the surface, true insight still comes from independent thinking and a long-term perspective.
4. Can you share a memorable project you’ve worked on and what made it stand out?
Artificial intelligence has been a key theme driving much of the market’s return in recent years. I’ve spent time studying previous innovation cycles and examining different parts of the value chain—from foundries and fabless chipmakers to frontier model developers and hyperscalers to electrical infrastructure, utilities, and different sources of energy. I’ve also drawn on the collective wisdom of colleagues who experienced the dot-com bubble firsthand to better understand the parallels and distinctions between that period and today’s unprecedented AI-driven cycle. The work has been both demanding and rewarding, and highly relevant to investment outcomes given AI’s growing impact across the economy.
5. What skills do you believe are essential for success in your field, and how do you cultivate them?
Curiosity, discipline, and humility are essential. Curiosity drives the desire to dig deeper and uncover what truly matters, discipline keeps the focus on process rather than short-term outcomes, and humility reminds you that markets are complex and certainty is rare. I try to cultivate these by reading broadly, learning from colleagues, and revisiting past decisions to refine my thinking over time.
6. How do you balance the demands of your job with your personal life, and what strategies do you use to manage stress?
It helps that I genuinely enjoy what I do, but I’ve learned the importance of keeping balance outside of work. Time with my family keeps me grounded and helps me maintain perspective—both in investing and in life. Living in Southern California, I try to take advantage of the beautiful beaches to unwind and stay active. Whether it’s swimming, learning to surf, or spending a relaxed afternoon outdoors, those moments help me recharge and return to work with a clearer mind.
7. What advice would you give to someone just starting out in your field?
Be patient and focus on the process. Build a strong foundation in understanding businesses and valuations and learn to think independently rather than chase consensus. Read widely, write down your thoughts, and revisit past decisions to refine your judgment. Above all, stay curious—investing is a lifelong learning journey.
